Black Beauties – bathroom contrasts in black-and-white

White stands for purity, innocence and transparency – and it's the traditional colour of the bathroom. Although the palette of market offers has much more to offer, it is unusual for the full range to be used. Shades of wood or grey were for a long time the only alternatives to a clean white. Bette's "Black Beauties" are a clear counterpart for the bath, shower and washbasin. And for all those who love the black-and-white contrast, the company even has black-and-white models.

A stroll through Bette’s high-tech production facility in Delbrück reveals an abundance of pure white baths, shower trays and washbasins. At the end of the production process, which is part high-tech and part skilled manual craftsmanship, between forming, enamelling and firing, is a majority of white bathroom products in steel/enamel. At Bette, around 90% of its baths are made in the classic white, whereas the figure for shower trays is 30%.

White walls? White furniture? Black structures? “The secret’s in the colour concept! Not only is the actual design more varied, but much more use is made of the options offered by colour. Here, the floor-level shower sets the trend,” explains Sven Rensinghoff, Bette’s Director of Marketing. “Black is classic and plain – you can’t go wrong. In that respect, black is a close relative to white.” And although black remains a somewhat unconventional choice of colour, especially in the bathroom, the steel/enamel products with their clear lines and regular shapes relax the eye, and create peace in our otherwise hectic daily lives. Black in the private wellness oasis introduces contrasts, and provides support for the eye – as well as giving the bathroom an individual touch.

Expressive and unfathomable

Black is a classic, and never goes out of fashion: black represents the unfathomable, the mysterious and the graceful. Bathroom products in this colour also represent sophistication, provide support and stand for strength. Rensinghoff: “An unbelievable concentration is taking place here. Those who opt for effects that are full of intensity will find the perfect solutions in our black steel/enamel collection.”

A bathroom like no other: the BetteAqua washbasin offers clear, straight lines, and the generous shape of the basin is seen to full advantage in black. Bette’s floor level showers in black are also highly expressive – they optimise the strong, seamless transition between shower zone and floor tiles in the matching choice of colour. Particular emphasis is given to the basic architectural idea of the shower area. And a black bath like the BetteStarlet Oval blends calmly and stylishly with any bathroom ambience.

Black. Pure. Without compromise. “Our black bathroom products are most assuredly not your everyday design compositions. However, those who appreciate glamorous elements will appreciate being able to opt for Bette’s masterpieces. And those who want the effect of a monolith can order one of our free-standing baths in black-and-white.” Bette only uses steel/enamel for its products, and this material provides additional elegance and a unique gloss. Work starts with the basic shape in titanium-refined steel. This is then finished with the BetteGlaze enamel surface, which is made of the natural materials water, glass, quartz, borax and soda. The results are ultra-hygienic bathroom products that are particularly easy to look after with good heat conductivity. Steel/enamel products also score for their skin-friendly surface, pleasant feel and lasting beauty.

Plea for more colour in the bathroom

“White is also a kind of black,” a statement originally made by the famous Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. So is black also the new white in the sanitary world? “Probably not. But we’d still like to issue a plea for people in Germany to be a little bolder, and bring colour into their bathrooms,” adds Sven Rensinghoff. Surprising results in bathroom design are possible using a cleverly thought-through concept and good planning. Bathroom products should not be overwhelming, or be allowed to dominate the room. A clever combination with other colour accents and good lighting needs to be included in the overall design – in the awareness that this is an area where a luxurious ambience can be developed.

Inventiveness is called for – while black-and-white is absolutely on trend in the bathroom. The strong, extensive contrasts look luxurious. Elegant, cool white and sophisticated, unapproachable black are the perfect duo. This combination of light and dark is skilfully combined in BetteBicolour: the free-standing bath combines the best of both colours. Matt or glossy black on the outside, white on the inside – and yet made in one piece. With a seam that can be seen but not felt as the interface between the contrasts.

And incidentally, black-and-white are by no means everything: Bette offers baths, shower areas in washbasins in over 600 shapes and more than 1000 colours.
